Geography
Mainpuri is located at 27°14′N 79°01′E / 27.23°N 79.02°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 153 metres (501 ft).
Demographics
As of 2001[update] India census,[2] Mainpuri had a population of 89,535. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Mainpuri has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 74%, and female literacy is 64%. In Mainpuri, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age. People speak Kannauji and BrijBhasha in day to day communication. Some very popular markets include Laneganj, Devi Road, Old Tehsil Road, Agra Road etc. known for Agro Commodities, handicrafts etc. Mainpuri today has population of over 1 Lakh in city and over 15 Lakhs as District.
Famous Temples
The city has some very old and popular Hindu temples. Popular temples include Sheetla Devi Temple, where every year during April Rural Exhibition-cum-Trade Fair is held for 20 days. Bhimsen Mandir is an ancient Shiv temple, besides "Falahari Ashram" situated on Jyoti-Devi Road has very rare Statue of Goddess Durga with 18 Arms. Also located on Devi road are twin Shiv Temples of Kale Mahadev and Shweat Mahadev. Hanuman Temple situated at old tehsil Road is visited by thousands on every Tuesdays and Saturdays.[citation needed]

Industry
Mainpuri is a trade center mainly for agricultural products in the state.[citation needed] Cotton ginning, oilseed milling, and lamp and glass manufacture constitute the prominent industries. The town is also a renowned for its tobacco and wooden sculptures. Mainpuri is also house for gold plywood manufacturing.[citation needed]
Places of interest
Fort of Maharaja Tej Singh Chauhan is situated at old Mainpuri at Devi Road. The Raja's palace is not a spot of tourist interest. The fort has become private property and only its remains are there. Nobody, not even locals, can visit the palace.[citation needed]
The Raja's palace, The Garhi, is the major point of tourist interest in the town. Modern places of attraction are Foolbagh and Lohia Park. Foolbagh is situated at Jail Chauraha while the Lohia Park is situated at District Collectrate. Both the parks have green lawn and fountains.
Mainpuri is also known for Sarus Crane, zoological name Grus antigone. The Sarus Crane is the only crane species that resides species of Sarus Crane known worldwide. This elegant bird, called Krouncha in India, is revered as a symbol of marital fidelity and is celebrated in myth and legend.[citation needed] There are estimated to be 8,000-10,000 Sarus Cranes in India. Two-thirds of its population resides in Karhal.
Health care
The district hospital is also named as Maharaja Tej Singh Jila Chikitsalya. Maharaja Tej Singh Jila Chikitsalya has a cancer hospital in its compound which is developed by state government with the help of World Bank. Mainpuri District has very high number of cancer patients due to consumption of 'Kapoori' (camphor) flavoured tobacco.[citation needed].district hospital of mainpuri was build over the land of kushwaha Rajputs of devpura, late. Shri Roshan Singh Kushwaha donates his land to Government for District hospital.

Mainpuri is well connected with other parts of the state by road and broad gauge railway so one can also visit Mainpuri by train. Currently the only train is the Kalindi express, which connects it to Delhi. The city is also linked by railways to Farrukhabad and Kanpur. Some major cities within 300 kilometre range from Mainpuri include Agra, Firozabad, Shikohabad, Etawah, Kanpur, Lucknow, Aligarh, Kannauj.

Northern Central Railways has open tenders of Rs. 32641755 in May 2011 for various work involved in 56 KM BG Line.
This line will connect Etawah and mainpuri bia Vaidpura, Karhal, Keerath pur. Once Mainpuri is connected to Etawah, Mainpuri will become a new Railway junction in North Central Railway Zone opeing up opportunities for development.
The Rail Minister has received a proposal to give at least two regular trains on this line, which will run bia Mainpuri. One of these train will be the Neebkarori Express which will run from Etawah to Kanpur bia Mainpuri and will also halt at Neebkaroli Station and Farrukhabad. This will be very helpful for Local religious tour NeebKarori Darshan and Ganga Snan. The second train is expected to run between Tundla to Kanpur which will be a passanger train.
New Routes for Jhansi Kanpur
Once Mainpuri is connected to Etawah,a number of trains will be diverted to this new route to reduce traffice of Jhansi Kanpur line and Delhi Hawra line.Mainpuri Kanpur route will attract total of around 4 to 5 existing trains.The count of trains running is expected to cross 10 by year 2015.
These trains will connect Mainpuri to major cities like Gwalior,Jhansi,Bhopal,Mumbai,Kanpur,Lucknow,Allahabad,Delhi.This will help local businness to give an opprtunity to increase trade amoung major cities .
This will also help city to conect with major cities for education,healthcare and tourarism .Two trains from Farrukhabad are proposed as of now.

Mainpuri is also known for its contribution in technical education. Government Polytechnic Mainpuri provides engineering diploma in Instrumentation & Control Engineering and Advance Microprocessor & Interface and Electronics. It is situated at Agra Road, near Mandi Samiti. Students from all districts of Uttar Pradesh come to study here.
