Godda is a city and a municipality in Godda district in the Indian state of Jharkhand. The district has an area of 2110 km². The district headquarter is Godda.

Geography

Godda is located at coord|24.83|N|87.22|E|. [ [http://www.fallingrain.com/world/IN/38/Godda.html Falling Rain Genomics, Inc - Godda] ] It has an average elevation of 77 metres (252 feet). Godda came into existence as the 55th district of undivided Bihar on may 25, may 25, 1983. After the division of the state on November 15, 2000., it was one among the 18th districts.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, [GR|India] Godda had a population of 37,007. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Godda has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 63%. In Godda, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The parliamentary constituency is Godda. The assembly constituencies are Madhupur, Jarmundi, Poraiyahat, Godda, Dhoraiya (SC) and Chakai. Godda was in Dumka Parliamentary constituency in 1957

History

Godda was a part of undivided Santhal Pargana district till 1981 Census. Later the old Godda sub-division of Santhal Pargana was separated and formed as a new district. As a consequence of the Santhal rebellion of 1845-55 the district of Santhal Paragna was created from portions of Bhagalpur and Birbhum. Godda district at present comprises eight Blocks viz. Meherma, Mahagama, Boarijor, Patargama, Godda, Sundurpahari, Paraiyahat and Thakur Gangati. Godda is the only town in the district. There are 2311 villages in the district.

Godda is district without any railwytrack. Many villages are still deprived from electricity. People suffer from lack of water to water the farm land. All villagers are farmers.

Communications

No rail link. Nearest railway link is Panjwara Road on the Bhagalpur-Mandar Hill section. The nearest major railway station is Bhagalpur. The other common access point to the railway link is Jasidih (Deoghar)and Pirpainti.Road links exist to Bhagalpur, Deoghar, Dumka, Lalmatiya and other major towns in the region.

Agriculture

Paddy, wheat and maize are the main crops grown in the district. Vegetables, linseed, khesari are other crops grown in the district.

Minerals

Coal is mined extensively across the entire district with Lalmatiya having the reputation for the largest open pit coal mine in Asia.There is no artificial irrigation facilities like dams, tunnel, tube wells. Farmers are solely depends on mercy of God for good rain. Natural calamity like flood and drought has becoming common tragedy since past 10 years.
