Ashoknagar (also Ashok Nagar) is a city in Madhya Pradesh state of central India. It is the administrative headquarters of Ashoknagar District. it was previously in in Guna district. Ashoknagar is well known for its Chanderi Silk Sarees, Grains Mandi and "Sharbati Gaihu" a type of wheat.

Ashoknagar is located on the northern-eastern part of Malwa Platue between Sindh and the Betwa. Mathematically the District is situated between the latitude 24.34 N and longitude 77.43 E . The eastern and western boundaries of the District are well defined by the rivers. The Betwa flows along the eastern boundary separating from Sagar District, and Lalitpur and Jhansi District of Uttar Pradesh. The Sindh is the main river flowing along the western boundary. Chanderi is famous for its exquisite and delicate muslin industry is a part of the district

Area and Population

Ashoknagar District is divided into five tehsils. Shahdora a town 15 kms from Ashoknagar had been recently given tehsil status in september 2008. Ashoknagar has population of 6 lakhs(approx) spread over area of 4673.94 sq.Km. The details of the Block wise population & Area as shown in Table -

Now By People Verdicts Ashoknagar's Tehsils Population is something about 70,000 and for the district the count is somewhere around 2,40,000 people (men + women). The most nearly district is Guna which is 45km far from there. Ashoknagar formerly knows as Pachar. Ashoknagar contains 5 tehsils. Esagarh, Chanderi, Mungaoli, Ashoknagar and Shahdora. Chanderi is place to watch the old temples and historical forts. The whole Chanderi side is filled with old temples and old places ideal to tourists. In Ashoknagar city there were two parts mainly. Across The Railway Gate and Gandhi Park Side. The railway line is in middle of the city. City have Station and Bus Stops. Ashoknagar Is Well connected to the main cities of india by road and trains also. Ashoknagar not a junction but the nearest junction is Guna and on the other side Bina.

Culture

Ashoknagar is famous for the Jain temple called Trikaal Choubeese, where the idols of past, present, and future Thirthankars, described in Jain religion, is found. It is also famous for the place Chanderi which is about 35 km from Ashoknagar. In Chanderi ancient sculptures are there in large numbers. Thubon Sidha Kshetra is a pilgrim centre for Jains. It is about 28km from Ashoknagar.
