Hindi : कैथल) (Punjabi : ਅੰਬਾਲਾ) is a city and amunicipal council inKaithal district in theIndia n state ofHaryana . Kaithal was previously a part of theKarnal District & later, Kurukshetra District until 1st November,1989 , when it became the headquarters of theKaithal District ofHaryana . Historically, it was known as "Kapisthal" & It is said to have been founded by the mythical heroYudhisthira ofMahabharata , and is connected by tradition with the monkey-god Hanuman. In1767 it fell into the hands of theSikh chieftain, Bhai Desu Singh, whose descendants, the bhais of Kaithal, ranked among the most powerfulCis-Sutlej states . Their territories lapsed to the British in1843 . There remain the fort of the bhais, and several Muslim tombs of the13th century and later. Razia Sultana, the first woman ruler of India, died here.This aspect is still not very commonly known to many, but residents of kaithal know about the mazaar of Razia Begum since generations.Geography
