The city name was actually 'ISHTIKAPURY'. ETAWAH came from EET + AWAA. 'EET' a Hindi word that means 'Clay Brick' and 'AWAA' is also Hindi word which means 'Oven'. They used to have so many brick producing oven factory in ISTIKAPURY that city name became ETAWAH, a city of brick producing ovens.
Etawah is a district by itself though it may come under the kanpur division. The city has a mix Hindu and Muslim population (Largely Hindu). The colorfull culture of this old city is worth commending as though it is backward as far as the progress and growth is concerned but the spirit of this city has never gone.
the temples like the KALKA JI(LAKHNA), KALI BADI , KALI WAHAN, TIXI TEMPLE and mosques like the JAMA MASJID(Chippaiti)have their heavy historic importance.
The native dialect of Etawah are exactly same as used in Hindu's holy book RAMAYAN, the longest poem in the history of human race.
Once president of India, Dr Zakir Husain has completed his High School from Islamia Inter College in Etawah.
Before attacking DELHI, the Mogul Empreror BABAR's army had a major stop over for several days in a small town of this city which is now known as BABARPUR.
A famous poet Mr. Babu Gulab Rai was born in Chipati of Etawah city.
The freedom fighter Respected Chandrashekhar Azad spent his last days in Etawah hiding from english, before going to Allhabad.
It is also believed that Rani Rukmani Wife of Lord Krishna was from 'Kudarkot' town of Etawah city.
Etawah's GHEE is famous all over India for its unique heavenly taste.
