Position Senator President of the Senate Joe Biden (D) President Pro Tempore Daniel Inouye (D) Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) The Vice President of the United States has the additional duty of President of the Senate. Because the number of seats in the United States Senate is an even number (two senators per state), it is the Vice President's job as President of the Senate to cast a tie-breaking vote in the event that "they be equally divided"--an equal number of Senators voting both for and against a motion.
