It broke away from theAmerican Anti-Slavery Society due to grievances withWilliam Lloyd Garrison 's leadership. The party first gathered inWarsaw, New York , and its first national convention took place in Albany on April 1, 1840.The Liberty Party nominated
James G. Birney , a Kentuckian and former slaveholder, for President in 1840 and 1844. The party did not attract much support. In 1848, the party met inBuffalo, New York , with other groups to form theFree Soil Party .
