This article lists political parties in Bermuda.
Bermuda has a two-party system, which means that there are two dominant political parties, with extreme difficulty for anybody to achieve electoral success under the banner of any other party. There are also a number of independent candidates. From 1968 to 1998 Bermuda was ruled by the United Bermuda Party, which is controlled by the white minority in Bermuda. Founded in 1963, the Progressive Labour Party, which represents the black majority, was founded -- a year before the UBP was. In 1998, the PLP, a moderate to liberal party, was finally swept to power for the first time after spending 30-plus years as the opposition. The PLP would go on to defeat the UBP, a conservative party, two more times; in 2003 and on December 18, 2007. The PLP currently holds 22 seats and the UBP controls 14. There are 36 seats in the parliament. After the most recent defeat by the UBP in the December 18 general election, in which its leader, Michael Dunkley was unseated after contesting in a district regarded as a PLP strong-hold, the once dominant white party has begun much needed soul-searching. There are now talks of it disbanding and reforming under fresh ideas and a new name after three consecutive losses at the polls.
