Development programme
National Highways Authority of India had taken up a mammoth project of widening and developing NH 34. Funded primarily by the Asian Development Bank, the project cost was pegged at Rs. 2,000 crore. According to the project plans, the existing two-lane highway was to be widened into a four-lane high-speed corridor.[2]However, as of January 2009, the national highway has been in a terrible state for several years now, with National Highways Authority of India and state public works department locked in a dispute over who should maintain the crucial link to north Bengal and the North-East. The state government has also been unable to acquire land for converting the two-lane road into a four-lane expressway.[3]
