It is the county seat of Crittenden County.[1] It is named for Francis Marion, a Brigadier General from South Carolina in the American Revolutionary War who was portrayed by Mel Gibson in The Patriot as Benjamin Martin.

Marion is located at 37°19′57″N 88°4′45″W / 37.3325°N 88.07917°W (37.332505, -88.079051)[2].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.3 square miles (8.5 km²), of which, 3.3 square miles (8.5 km²) of it is land and 0.30% is water.
Demographics
As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 3,196 people, 1,415 households, and 881 families residing in the city. The population density was 971.7 people per square mile (375.1/km²). There were 1,595 housing units at an average density of 484.9 per square mile (187.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.65% White, 1.75% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.03% Asian, 0.28% from other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.84% of the population.
There were 1,415 households, out of which 25.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.0% were married couples living together, 12.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 35.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.17 and the average family size was 2.79.
In the city, the population was spread out with 20.4% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 22.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 81.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $23,854, and the median income for a family was $33,980. Males had a median income of $26,628 versus $18,646 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,766. About 20.2% of families and 24.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 36.5% of those under age 18 and 15.8% of those age 65 or over.

Attractions
Marion is the home of the Marion Bobcats, a baseball team in the collegiate woodbat Ohio Valley League, which has four teams in Kentucky—Marion, Fulton, Owensboro and Tradewater (Dawson Springs). The Bobcats play a 42-game season in June and July of each year.
