Bedford, Virginia , former home of the first settler, Richard Ball, who built a house near what he called Bedford Spring in 1805. The town was founded in 1816 but not incorporated until 1850.Geography

As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 677 people, 282 households, and 183 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 1,690.3 people per square mile (653.5/km²). There were 297 housing units at an average density of 741.5/sq mi (286.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.93% White, 0.15% African American, 1.77% from other races, and 0.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.36% of the population.There were 282 households out of which 35.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.4% were married couples living together, 20.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.1% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the city the population was spread out with 28.5% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 17.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 89.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 74.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,528, and the median income for a family was $36,250. Males had a median income of $30,341 versus $22,188 for females. The
