The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYSDMV or DMV) is the governmental agency responsible for registering and inspecting automobiles and other motor vehicles as well as NYS Enhanced Driver License/Driver License and Enhanced Non-Driver Photo ID Card/Non-Driver Photo ID Card in the U.S. state of New York.As of 2008, the NYSDMV has 11,284,546 drivers licenses on file [1] and 10,697,644 vehicle registrations in force.[2]

Divisions
Division of Field Investigations
The Division of Field Investigations (DFI) is the criminal investigations arm of the DMV. It employs highly trained investigators/Law Enforcement Officers to combat auto theft, identity theft and fraudulent document related crimes which take place in New York. These investigators are armed New York State peace officers with statewide authority to enforce laws and handle investigations.
