Mejia (community development block) (Bengali: মেজিয়া সমষ্টি উন্নয়ন ব্লক) is an administrative division in Bankura Sadar subdivision of Bankura district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Mejia police station serves this block. Headquarters of this block is at Mejia.[1][2]Government of West Bengal has planned a Special Economic Zone in Saltora. It is on NH 60 connecting Raniganj with Midnapore via Bankura and Bishnupur. There is a bridge on the Damodar River. [1] It is 35 km from Durgapur.

Mejia is located at 23°34′N 87°06′E / 23.57°N 87.10°E / 23.57; 87.10.[3] It has an average elevation of 77 m (253 ft).

Mejia community development block has an area of 162.90  km2.[2]

Demographics

In the 2001 census, Mejia community development block had a population of 76,117 out of which 39,518 were males and 36,599 were females. Decadal growth for the period 1991-2001 was 9.85% for Mejia, against 13.79% in Bankura district. Decadal growth in West Bengal was 17.84%.[2]

Mejia Bloc had a total scheduled caste population of 25,740 and a scheduled tribe population of 2,196.[5]

Economy

The primarily agricultural region started changing with the mining of coal by Eastern Coalfields Limited in the region. It is now an important coal mining area of Coal India Limited.[6] In 1996 Mejia Thermal Power Station was set up by Damodar Valley Corporation at Durlavpur. It has three units of 210 MW each. Capacity addition of 2 X 250 MW has been planned.[7] La Farge is setting up a cement plant at Mejia.[8] It would use the fly ash generated by the thermal power plant.[9] There are other units such as Shova Ispat which is investing Rs 279 crore (Rs 2.79 billion) in a sponge iron, roll product and ferro alloy unit in Mejia.[10]

The Government of West Bengal along with District Administration have selected few blocks of Bankura District as the most promising areas for setting up big & medium scale Industries. Mejia is one of them.[11]
