Gobardanga ( _bn. গোবরডাঙ্গা) is a city and a municipality under Habra police station of Barasat sadar subdivision [ [http://www.wbcensus.gov.in/DataTables/01/Table-3.htm District-wise list of statutory towns] ] in North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is one of the oldest municipality of West Bengal. "Go" means 'world/earth', "Bar" means 'Greatest' and "Danga" means 'Place'. ie. "Gobardanga" means "the greatest place on earth"

History

Gobardanga has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 84%, and female literacy is 75%. In Gobardanga, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

There are several renowned schools in this town. Gobardanga Khantura High School (1856) is one of the oldest high schools in modern IndiaFact|date=February 2007. It has a College named Gobardanga Hindu College along with Hostel.
