Gobardanga ( _bn. গোবরডাঙ্গা) is a city and a municipality under Habra police station of Barasat sadar subdivision [ [http://www.wbcensus.gov.in/DataTables/01/Table-3.htm District-wise list of statutory towns] ] in North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is one of the oldest municipality of West Bengal. "Go" means 'world/earth', "Bar" means 'Greatest' and "Danga" means 'Place'. ie. "Gobardanga" means "the greatest place on earth"

History

It has strong historic background from the pre-independence era, i.e. jamindar bari, oxebow lake, site of probably the first widow marriage in modern India.Fact|date=February 2007Gobardanga is also known as The Village of Theatre. it have almost 12 theatre group, from which Gobardanga Naksha is one of the leading theatre organization in bengal, website- www.nakshaindia.org

It is 58 km from Sealdah Station on the Sealdah-Bangaon branch line of Eastern Railway. [ Eastern Railway time table. ]

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, [GR|India] Gobardanga had a population of 41,618. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Gobardanga has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 84%, and female literacy is 75%. In Gobardanga, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Education

There are several renowned schools in this town. Gobardanga Khantura High School (1856) is one of the oldest high schools in modern IndiaFact|date=February 2007. It has a College named Gobardanga Hindu College along with Hostel.
