In 1996 and 1991, Haradhan Bauri of CPI (M) defeated Pulakesh Saha and Sastidhar Bagdi, both of INC, in the respective years. In 1987, 1982 and 1977, Sukhendu Khan of CPI (M) defeated Kallol Saha of INC, Sasthi Bauri of INC and Kanai Saha of JNP, in the respective years. In September 2005, South Eastern Railway threw open passenger services on the 41 km long Bankura-Sonamukhi broad gauge section, being the first phase of the Bankura-Damodar River Railway project. BDR project entails extension from Sonamukhi to Raina (19.8 km) and then on to Masagram, providing direct connectivity to Howrah through Eastern Railway.
