Rampurhat (alternatively Rampur Hat; in Bengali রামপুরহাট) is a city and a municipality in Birbhum District in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is a small and peaceful town near the West Bengal / Jharkhand border. Distance from Kolkata is approximately 219 KM (railway distance).

History

This city is important because of the tourist attraction for Tarapith which contains an important Hindu temple and famous for the Great devotee 'Bamakhepa'. It is also recognised as 'Shaktipith'as per Hindu belief. The river Dharka flows by this side.Another attraction for Hindu devotees 'Nalateswari Mandir' situated at Nalhati,15 K.M. away from the town. The temple is described as one of the 'Satipith' of 51 other Satipith in India. Birchandrapur, 20 k.m. away from the town, is famous for the bith place of Nityananda Swami, co founder of Baisnav religion with Shri Chityanyadev. Birchandrapur, named after Birbhadra Goswami - the son of Nityananda, is a part of the village Ekachakra which according to mythology has been inhabited by the Pandavas. 'Akali mandir' is situated at Bhadrapur, 25 k.m.from Rampurhat and famous for its unique hexagonal structure and had an history of more than 300 years. It's also a business centre for rice.

Rampurhat is also an important rail station (Soon going to be a junction) which connects the southern part of bengal to northern & also to north east states.So many long diatance trains like Cochin Exp, Bangalore-Guwahati,Thrivandrum-Guwahati is operational via Rampurhat,which is also an important stoppage for the trains like Ganadebata Exp, KanchanKanya Exp, Uttarbanga Exp, Saraighat Exp , Newly launched Shahid Exp, Howrah-Malda Intercity Exp, Kanchan Jungha Exp.

As state expressway no-4 passed through the town it is also well connected by road. Frequent State Transport Corp's buses & private owned buses helped the travellers to move to Siliguri, Coachbehar,Kolkata, Durgapur, Asansol, Medinipur, Malda ,Dumka ,Deoghar throughout the day.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Rampurhat had a population of 50,609. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Rampurhat has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79%, and female literacy is 66%. In Rampurhat, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Economics

The town is also khown for Stone crushers & mines , which are situated on the Bengal - Jharkhand border(most are in jharkhand).This belt provides employment to a wide range of peoples from all over Birbhum District & Santhal Pargana

Politics

Asish Banerjee of AITC won the Rampurhat assembly seat in 2006 and 2001 defeating Nirad Baran Mandal of AIFB in 2006 and Md. Hannan of FBL in 2001. Md. Hannan of FBL defeated Satyendranath Das of BJP in 1996. The Late Sashanka Sekhar Mondal of FBL defeated Satyendranath Das of BJP in 1991, Asish Banerjee of INC in 1987, Ananda Gopal Roy of INC in 1982 and Tapash Kumar Mukhopadhyay of JNP in 1977. Education

There are 4 major schools for high studies - namely J. L. Vidyabhaban (one of the best educational institutes in Birbhum), Rampurhat High School (one of the oldest school in Birbhum, estd. in 1886), Rampurhat Girls' High School and Rampurhat High School for Girls and one college - Rampurhat College.
