Salanpur ( _bn. সালানপুর) is a town in Asansol subdivision of Bardhaman district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is near Maithon dam of Damodar Valley Corporation and the Jharkhand border.

Geography

The Asansol-Durgapur region is composed of undulating latterite soil. This area lies between two mighty rivers – the Damodar and the Ajay. They flow almost parallel to each other in the region – the average distance between the two rivers is around 30 km. For ages the area was heavily forested and infested with plunderers and marauders. The discovery of coal led to industrialisation of the area and most of the forests have been cleared. Nunia, a small stream about 40 km long has its origin near Adra village in the Salanpur area, flows through the Barabani area, past Asansol and joins the Damodar in the Raniganj area. [ Chattopadhyay, Akkori, pp 26-27 ]

Economy

With extensive underground mining for many years, this area has been facing the problem of land subsidence. About 361 villages under the Raniganj and Salanpur coalfield areas are the victims of subsidence. teel Plant

The West Bengal Government signed in May 2007 an agreement with Bhushan Steel to set up a 2 million tonnes integrated steel plant and a 1000 MW captive thermal power plant at Salanpur. 2,500 acres of land will be required for the purpose. The plant is expected to be operational in 2012.
