Geography

Titagarh is located at coord|22.74|N|88.37|E| [ [http://www.fallingrain.com/world/IN/28/Titagarh.html Falling Rain Genomics, Inc - Titagarh] ] . It has an average elevation of 15 metres (49 feet). It is part of the Kolkata Suburban Railway system.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Titagarh had a population of 124,198. Males constitute 57% of the population and females 43%. Titagarh has an average literacy rate of 67%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 74%, and female literacy is 57%. In Titagarh, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The Jute Mills drew in a large labour force from the neighbouring states of Bihar and Orissa, as well as eastern Uttar Pradesh, quite often forming an overwhelming majority of the population in the area, living in shanty towns and bustees dotting the mill area. Titagrh Paper Mills was set up at Titagarh and Kakinara in 1882. Politics

Dr. Pravin Kumar Shaw of CPI(M) won the Titagarh assembly seat defeating Meena Ghosh of AITC in 2006, Ashok Shukla of AITC in 2001 and INC in 1996, and Ganga Prasad Saha of INC in 1991. Ganga Prasad Saha of INC defeated Mohammed Amin of CPI (M) in 1987 and 1982. Mohammad Amin of CPI (M) defeated Ganga Prasad Saha of INC in 1977.
