Manbazar, Puncha and Kenda police stations serve this block. Headquarters of this block is at Manbazar. [1][2]

History
Jaina Bhagavati-Sutra of 5th century AD mentions that Purulia was one of the sixteen mahajanapadas and was a part of the kingdom known as Vajra-bhumi in ancient times. In 1833, Manbhum district was carved out of Jungle Mahals district, with head quarters at Manbazar. In 1838, the headquarters was transferred to Purulia. In 1956, Manbhum district was partitioned between Bihar and West Bengal under the States Reorganization Act and the Bihar and West Bengal (Transfer of Territories) Act 1956.[3]
Maoist activities
Manbazar, along with certain other areas such as Banduan, Jhalda, and Jaipur are part of the area of violent activities by Maoists, also referred to as Naxalites.[4][5][6][7]
Geography
Manbazar is located at 23°03′41″N 86°39′51″E / 23.0615°N 86.6642°E.
Manbazar I community development block has an area of 378.82 km2.[2]
The area forms the lowest step of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The general scenario is undulating land with scattered hills.[8]
The Kangsabati Project has submerged large areas of Purulia District in the Manbazar area.[9]
Gram panchayats
Gram panchayats of Manbazar I block/ panchayat samiti are: Baramasya-Ramnagar, Bamni-Majhihira, Bhalubasa, Bisri, Chandra-Pairachali, Dhanara, Gopalnagar, Jitjuri, Kamta-Jangidiri and Manbazar.[10]
Demographics
As per 2001 census, Manbazar I block had a total population of 127,609, out of which 64,310 were males and 63,299 were females. Manbazar I block registered a population growth of 8.56 per cent during the 1991-2001 decade. Decadal growth for Purulia district was 13.96 per cent.[2]Decadal growth in West Bengal was 17.84 per cent.[11]
In Manbazar I CD Bloc the scheduled caste population was 31,233 and the scheduled tribe population was 30,402. Each of these groups formed about a quarter of the total population.[12]
Literacy
As per 2001 census, Manbazar I block had a total literacy of 55.09 per cent for the 6+ age group. While male literacy was 74.00 per cent female literacy was 35.94 per cent. Purulia district had a total literacy of 55.57 per cent, male literacy being 73.72 per cent and female literacy being 36.50 per cent.[13]
Culture
The ruins of a 12th/13th century Buudheswara Shiva and other temples lie at Budhpur, under Manbazar Police Station, 6 km (3.7 mi) north of Manbazar town on the road to Hura, on the north bank of the Kangsabati River (locally known as Kasai).[14]
