Previously it was an island in the
Hooghly River . Birnagar Municipality is more than 200 years old. First chairman of the Birnagar Municipality was Kabi Nabinchandra Sen.Before British came, Birnagar was named as "Ula". It is mentioned in the short story "Post Master" by
Rabindranath Tagore and in the novel "Aporajito" byBibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay .It earlier had two
