According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.1 km2), all land.
History
In 1950 Oakland had a population of 545.[4]
Demographics
As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 936 people, 341 households, and 257 families residing in the city. The population density was 574.2 person per square mile (221.7/km²). There were 379 housing units at an average density of 232.5 houses per square mile (89.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 64.74% White, 31.30% African American, 0.11% Native American, 1.07% Asian, 0.64% from other races, and 2.14% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.53% of the population.
There were 341 households out of which 34.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.5% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.6% were non-families. 18.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the town the population was spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 27.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 92.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $52,159, and the median income for a family was $56,250. Males had a median income of $40,000 versus $36,161 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,857. About 5.2% of families and 5.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.6% of those under age 18 and 8.9% of those age 65 or over.
