History Clever was established in the 19th century and did quite well as a town while the railroad ran by it. There was a movie theater and a hotel. Yet, after the train no longer ran there, the people in town spread somewhat, moving to nearby Boaz, but most to more populated towns such as Nixa or Republic.

There are approximately 7000 students in the entire school system. In March 2006 a series of tornadoes smashed into the outer reaches of the town, resulting in the loss of only a few houses with no injuries.

Clever is the birthplace of television actor Robert Mandan.
