county located in theU.S. state ofMissouri . As of 2000, the population was 24,977. Itscounty seat is KirksvilleGR|6. The county was organized in 1841 and named forJohn Adair , governor ofKentucky . It is a part of the 18thMissouri State Senate district, currently represented byWes Shoemyer , and the first and second districts of theMissouri House of Representatives , currently represented respectively byBrian Munzlinger andRebecca McClanahan .Adair County is part of the Kirksville Micropolitan Statistical Area.

census GR|2 of 2000, there were 24,977 people, 9,669 households, and 5,346 families residing in the county. Thepopulation density was 44 people per square mile (17/km²). There were 10,826 housing units at an average density of 19 per square mile (7/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 95.82% White, 1.20% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 1.39% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 1.26% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 9,669 households out of which 25.20% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.50% were married couples living together, 7.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 44.70% were non-families. 31.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.50% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the county the population was spread out with 19.20% under the age of 18, 27.40% from 18 to 24, 22.80% from 25 to 44, 18.40% from 45 to 64, and 12.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 88.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $26,677, and the median income for a family was $38,085. Males had a median income of $26,323 versus $21,837 for females. The
