The 36th Miss World Pageant was held on November 13, 1986 in the Royal Albert Hall, London, UK. The winner was Giselle Jeanne-Marie Laronde (Queen of Americas) from Trinidad & Tobago. Runner up was Pia Rosenberg Larsen (Queen of Europe) representing Denmark and third was Chantal Schreiber from Austria.

Returning countries and debuts

  • Antigua, British Virgin Islands, Macau, and Sierra Leone competed in Miss World for the first time.
  • Mauritius last competed in 1980.
  • Tonga, and Turkey last competed in 1983.
  • Honduras last competed in 1984.

Withdrawals and nations not competing

  • Aruba, and Puerto Rico lost its Miss World franchise due to financial assistance issues.

Other notes

  • British Virgin Islands, Anthonia Brenda Lewis, died of cancer in 2000.
  • Preliminary swimsuits in Miss World 1986 were held in Macau.
  • Ireland won the Miss Photogenic award for the third time.
  • The Parade of Nations was held outside of the main stage for the first time, which was shot in the Ruins of St. Paul's, Macau.
  • 10 out of 15 countries which made it into the semifinals, were not in the semifinals last year: Ecuador (1970), Costa Rica (1978), Panama (1979), Denmark, Philippines, and Trinidad & Tobago (1982), Yugoslavia (1983), and Austria, and Colombia (1984). Swaziland had made into the semi-finals for the first time since its debut in 1975.
  • United States, Halle Berry, became a successful actress and an Oscar awardee.
