- Aruba, and Puerto Rico lost its Miss World franchise due to financial assistance issues.
Other notes
- British Virgin Islands, Anthonia Brenda Lewis, died of cancer in 2000.
- Preliminary swimsuits in Miss World 1986 were held in Macau.
- Ireland won the Miss Photogenic award for the third time.
- The Parade of Nations was held outside of the main stage for the first time, which was shot in the Ruins of St. Paul's, Macau.
- 10 out of 15 countries which made it into the semifinals, were not in the semifinals last year: Ecuador (1970), Costa Rica (1978), Panama (1979), Denmark, Philippines, and Trinidad & Tobago (1982), Yugoslavia (1983), and Austria, and Colombia (1984). Swaziland had made into the semi-finals for the first time since its debut in 1975.
- United States, Halle Berry, became a successful actress and an Oscar awardee.
