IndiaMiss World 1997, the 47th Miss World pageant was held at the Baie Lazare, Seychelles on November 22, 1997. 86 delegates delegates competed for the coveted crown. At the end of the event, India's Diana Hayden came out victorious. Richard Steinmetz hosted the pageant, while Latin sensation Ricky Martin provided entertainment. Miss Botswana, Mpule Kwelagobe went on to win the Miss Universe 1999 pageant after being unplaced at Miss World.

- Nigeria did not compete in Miss World because of sponsorship problems and scheduling conflict.
- Curaçao failed to send a delegate in Miss World.
Guam did not compete due to no pageant and funding
Other Notes
- Botswana (Mpule Kwelagobe) won the title of Miss Universe 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago.
- Ireland (Andrea Roche) competed in Miss Universe 1998 and was a semi-finalist.
- Australia (Laura Csortan) won the Miss Amity award in Miss Universe 1997.
- This is the first time that no Latin American country had made into the semi-finals.
- This year marked the last time a Miss United Kingdom made the semi-finals.
- 8 out of 10 countries which made it into the semifinals, were not in the semifinals last year: Lebanon (1975), Thailand (1989), New Zealand and Turkey (1991), United States (1993), Malaysia and United Kingdom (1994), and Australia (1995).
