Matthew Sheridan "Matt" Cardle (born 15 April 1983)^[1] is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist who rose to fame after winning the seventh series of The X Factor in 2010. He received a £1 million recording contract with Syco Music by winning, and his debut number one single "When We Collide" was released immediately after he won.^[2] It sold 439,000 copies in its first week to become the UK Christmas number one.

Early life

Cardle was born in Southampton, Hampshire, to David and Jennifer Cardle^[1] (née Horner)^[3] on 15 April 1983.^[1] He has an older brother - Dominic,^[1] and four foster^{[clarification needed]} brothers; Julian, Ben, Rob and Tom.^[4] When he was two, he was diagnosed with Wilms' tumour; he recovered after having one of his kidneys removed.^[5] His family lived in Bristol where he went to nursery school, and at the age of about five, they moved to Essex.^[1] He attended the independent Stoke College in Suffolk,^[6] then the Sixth Form College in Colchester. Cardle has had jobs as a bricklayer, postman, milkman and most recently, painter and decorator. In 2005 he was a member of the alternative rock / pop band Darwyn and recorded an 11 track album When You Wake and the follow-up EP Little Sunlight in 2006,^[7][8][9] and latterly played acoustic covers with band mate Ali McMillan in venues around Essex and Suffolk.^[10] In 2009, he became the frontman and guitarist of a rock band called Seven Summers.^[11] They released a self-titled album Seven Summers on 22 January 2010 and performed live on Sue Marchant's BBC radio program on 8 December 2009.^[12]

Solo music career

2010: The X Factor and debut single

In 2010, Cardle auditioned for the seventh series of The X Factor, singing Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good".^[13] He was mentored by Dannii Minogue and was announced the winner on 12 December 2010, receiving 44.61% of the vote. Cardle was Minogue's last remaining act by week 8, following the elimination of Paije Richardson.^[14][15] As the winner, Cardle received a £1 million recording contract with Syco Music. Cardle received the most votes every week from week 2, being beaten only by Mary Byrne in week 1.^[16]

The week after the The X Factor final, Cardle's winner's song "When We Collide" went to #1 on the UK Singles Chart to become the Christmas number 1 and remained there for three consecutive weeks,^[17] becoming the second biggest selling single of 2010 with 815,000 copies.^[18] The song also entered the Irish Singles Chart at number 1 on 17 December 2010, where it spent four consecutive weeks at the peak.^{[citation needed]} The song was nominated in the Best British Single category at the 2011 BRIT Awards.^[19]

2011-present: Letters

On 15 March 2011, it was reported that Cardle has signed a record deal with Syco Music in a joint venture with Columbia Records, becoming the first The X Factor winner not to be exclusively signed to Simon Cowell's label.^[20] It was also announced that Cardle has signed with Will Talbot of Modest! Management ^[21]

On 18 August 2011, Cardle revealed that his debut album, Letters, would be released in the UK on October 17 along with five of the tracks to be included on the album. Whilst working on the album Cardle collaborated with various writers including Eg White.^[22]

The first single "Run For Your Life" had its first radio play on September 5th 2011, ahead of its release on 9th October. Upon release and an X Factor return performance, "Run For Your Life" debuted at number 6 on the UK Top 40 Chart the week ending 16th October. In its second week the song fell 17 places to number 23. The same week, his debut album, Letters, charted at number 2 on the UK Album's chart.^[23]
