History
2010: The X Factor
In 2010, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson all applied as solo candidates for the seventh series of The X Factor, but failed to qualify for the "Boys" category. After suggestion by guest judge Nicole Scherzinger, the five were put into a band, thus qualifying for the "Groups" category.[5] After the elimination of F.Y.D., Diva Fever and Belle Amie within four weeks, they were Simon Cowell's last act in the competition. One Direction finished third behind runner-up Rebecca Ferguson and winner Matt Cardle. Immediately after the final, their song "Forever Young", which would have been released if they had won The X Factor, was leaked onto the internet.[citation needed]

One Direction made an appearance on The Alan Titchmarsh Show on 4 April 2011 and Malik confirmed their debut single "What Makes You Beautiful" would be released in June, though it was pushed back to August in order to coincide with the launch of the eighth series of The X Factor,[8] and then again to September. While on the show, One Direction also confirmed they are the new ambassadors for Pokémon.[9] On 29 July, they made an appearance on Alan Carr: Chatty Man.[10]
They developed their debut album with Savan Kotecha[11] and released their debut single "What Makes You Beautiful" on 11 September 2011.[12] It was written by Carl Falk, Savan Kotecha and Rami Yacoub.[13] The song received its first airplay on 10 August on BBC Radio 1, and broke pre-order sales record for Sony Music.[14] It entered the UK Singles Chart at #1 with first-week sales of 153,965, the highest of the year.
One Direction will release their second single "Gotta Be You" on 13 November 2011.[15] The song was written by Steve Mac and August Rigo. The single will be followed by their debut studio album, Up All Night on 21 November.[16] The album features songs written by Kelly Clarkson and Ed Sheeran.[17]
The group performed the single for the first time on Red or Black? on 10 September. On 26 September, One Direction announced their debut headline UK tour, set for December 2011 and January 2012.[18]

One Direction became the brand ambassadors for Pokémon Black and White in April 2011. They starred in a series of television ads, as well as special events performing for and meeting fans.[25]
The band also launched limited edition Nokia C2-02 and Nokia C3-00 phones. They contain exclusive content such as One Direction wallpapers, ringtones, and behind the scenes videos of the band.[26]
