Rowetta is most noted for her appearance on series 1 of The X Factor in the UK, in which she came fourth after
Tabby Callaghan, G4 and Steve Brooksteinand being last female in the competition. The exposure got her a record deal, and her first solo album "Rowetta".
Rowetta's musical career began as a professional club singer, before progressing to releasing two singles with the
Vanilla Sound Corpin 1987, whilst appearing as a backing singer on numerous songs. During this time, she released two songs - "Back Where We Belong" and "Passion". In 1988 she collaborated with Dynasty of 2on the single "Stop This Thing".
Rowetta continued to work as a backing singer during the late 1980s and 1990s, including providing backing vocals for
Inner Cityand for Simply Red's "Stars" album. In 1990 she joined The Happy Mondaysas a backing singer. She featured on their single Step Onwhich charted at Number 5. This was followed by 2 albums " Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches" and " Yes Please!" and a world tour.
After the Happy Mondays break up, she did not return to the music business immediately, although she did play herself in the film
Michael Winterbottomfilm 24 Hour Party People.
She is currently writing and recording with
Sly & Robbie(Jamaica), Sugiurumn (Japan) and Julien L and Didier Vanelli (France) . In November 2005 and 2006, she appeared on the BBC's Children in Needsinging live on the main stage with the BBC Orchestra in 2005 and appearing on Celebrity Scissorhandsin 2006. Rowetta continues to tour extensively throughout England and will tour Japan in May 2007 to promote her track HOUSE 69, with Sugiurumn.In 2007, Rowetta made her musical theatre debut, at The Palace Theatre, Manchester in The Best Of Broadway, alongside Suranne Jones. She also appeared at the indigO2 with Marti Webb, Stephen Gateleyand Maria Freidmanin Christmas on Broadway.In August 2007 Rowetta began presenting the 'Drive' show, on Manchester's gay and lesbian radio station, Gaydio. She has recently become the voice behind the sung jingles on Salford City Radio.At the start of 2008, Rowetta starred in "The Songs Of Sister Act" tour with Sheila Fergusonand the London Community Gospel ChoirAccording to a 2008 BBC 6 Musicinterview with Peter Hook, Rowetta has recorded vocals for a track on the debut album by his new band Freebass.
