Marshall County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 12,640, which is a decrease of 4.1% from 13,180 in 2000.[1] Its county seat is Lacon.[2]

Marshall County is part of the Peoria, Illinois, Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

According to the 2010 census, the county has a total area of 398.51 square miles (1,032.1 km2), of which 386.79 square miles (1,001.8 km2) (or 97.06%) is land and 11.72 square miles (30.4 km2) (or 2.94%) is water.[3]

History

Marshall County was formed in 1839 out of Putnam County. It was named in honor of John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, who died in 1835.

Demographics

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 13,180 people, 5,225 households, and 3,720 families residing in the county. The population density was 34 people per square mile (13/km²). There were 5,914 housing units at an average density of 15 per square mile (6/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 98.19% White, 0.35% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 39.1% were of German, 12.2% Irish, 10.5% English, 9.3% American and 5.8% Italian ancestry according to Census 2000.

There were 5,225 households out of which 29.60% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.80% were married couples living together, 6.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.80% were non-families. 25.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.60% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the county the population was spread out with 23.50% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 25.60% from 25 to 44, 24.90% from 45 to 64, and 18.80% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 96.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.70 males.

In recent years, average temperatures in the county seat of Lacon have ranged from a low of 15 °F (−9 °C) in January to a high of 87 °F (31 °C) in July, although a record low of −27 °F (−33 °C) was recorded in January 1999 and a record high of 103 °F (39 °C) was recorded in July 2005. Average monthly precipitation ranged from 1.55 inches (39 mm) in January to 4.20 inches (107 mm) in May.[5]
