Pontiac is a city in Livingston County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,864 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Livingston County.GR|6

The town is also the setting of Grandview, U.S.A.

Geography

Pontiac is located at coor dms|40|52|48|N|88|37|49|W|city (40.880003, -88.630385).GR|1

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.6 km²), of which, 5.2 square miles (13.6 km²) of it is land and 0.19% is water.

Most of the land in Pontiac is farm ground.

On January 9 2008, Pontiac had one of the worst floods in its history, rivalling or surpassing in severity one from 1982. It was impossible to make an exact measurement of the height the river crested at because the water was so high that the automatic reader could not read it correctly, and it was too dangerous to measure it manually.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 11,864 people, 4,139 households, and 2,619 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,263.0 people per square mile (874.2/km²). There were 4,379 housing units at an average density of 835.3/sq mi (322.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 85.39% White, 10.90% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 2.06% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.37% of the population.

There were 4,139 households out of which 31.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.6% were married couples living together, 11.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 31.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 32.7% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 120.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 125.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $37,593, and the median income for a family was $43,231. Males had a median income of $35,709 versus $22,302 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,863. About 8.1% of families and 11.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.5% of those under age 18 and 8.9% of those age 65 or over.
