Carroll County was formed in 1839 out of Jo Daviess County. The County is named for Charles Carroll who signed the
Declaration of Independence . Carroll, who died in 1832 was the last signer to die.Demographics

The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the county the population was spread out with 24.30% under the age of 18, 6.60% from 18 to 24, 25.40% from 25 to 44, 24.50% from 45 to 64, and 19.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 97.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.10 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $37,148, and the median income for a family was $43,685. Males had a median income of $31,318 versus $21,753 for females. The
per capita income for the county was $18,688. About 7.40% of families and 9.60% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 13.30% of those under age 18 and 5.90% of those age 65 or over.
