DeWitt County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 16,561, which is a decrease of 1.4% from 16,798 in 2000.[1] Its name is in honor of the seventh Governor of New York State, DeWitt Clinton. Its county seat is Clinton.[2] The U.S. Census Bureau and the USGS list the county's name as De Witt, although the county uses the name DeWitt (no space). The county was formed in 1839 from Macon and McLean Counties.

According to the 2010 census, the county has a total area of 405.08 square miles (1,049.2 km2), of which 397.51 square miles (1,029.5 km2) (or 98.13%) is land and 7.57 square miles (19.6 km2) (or 1.87%) is water.[3]

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 16,798 people, 6,770 households, and 4,684 families residing in the county. The population density was 42 people per square mile (16/km²). There were 7,282 housing units at an average density of 18 per square mile (7/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 97.81% White, 0.49% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 1.27% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 24.2% were of German, 18.8% American, 16.2% English and 11.4% Irish ancestry according to Census 2000. 98.4% spoke English and 1.3% Spanish as their first language.

There were 6,770 households out of which 30.90% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.80% were married couples living together, 8.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.80% were non-families. 26.80% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.60% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the county the population was spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 28.30% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 15.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $41,256, and the median income for a family was $50,429. Males had a median income of $35,902 versus $23,998 for females. The per capita income for the county was $20,488. About 5.80% of families and 8.20% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.90% of those under age 18 and 7.20% of those age 65 or over.

In recent years, average temperatures in the county seat of Clinton have ranged from a low of 17 °F (−8 °C) in January to a high of 88 °F (31 °C) in July, although a record low of −25 °F (−32 °C) was recorded in February 1905 and a record high of 113 °F (45 °C) was recorded in July 1954. Average monthly precipitation ranged from 1.95 inches (50 mm) in February to 4.54 inches (115 mm) in July.[5]
