History
Founded in June 1951, Donghua University was originally named East-China Textile Institute of Science and Technology (华东纺织工学院). In September 1985, the university changed its name to China Textile University (中国纺织大学) and changed it once again to Donghua University in August 1999. It has been a state-key university since 1960 and was one of the first educational institutions in China authorized to confer all three levels of degree: bachelor's, master's, and doctorate.
Academic development
Over half a century, Donghua University has developed from a single-discipline textile institute into a multi-disciplinary university with engineering as its main focus and natural science, management and liberal arts developing alongside.

There are also the Department of Physical Education, the International Cultural Exchange School and Raffles Design Institute, Shanghai (formerly DHU-Lasalle International Design College) which is jointly run and managed by Donghua University and singaporean education provide Raffles Education Corporation.
Donghua University has three postdoctoral programs and has been authorized to offer 24 doctoral programs, 48 master programs and 39 bachelor programs. The disciplines of Donghua fall into nine major categories including engineering and natural science. It has four state-key disciplines, three Shanghai municipal key disciplines, a batch of state and ministry key laboratories, and national and ministry engineering research centers. The National University Science Park at Donghua was recently established.
The university has a total enrolment of over 20,000 students and a faculty and staff of over 3,300, including four academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, two professors specially engaged as Changjiang scholars and about 600 professors and associate professors.
Educational standards
Known as the cradle for textile professionals in China, Donghua University adheres to an ethos of "strictness, diligence, concreteness and innovation" and implements the idea that "all-round development of students is the center of everything". It aims to educate talents of both ability and moral integrity. In recent years Donghua University has carried out curriculum reform on the credit system. Based on common sense education, it carries out "specialist education with broad coverage and flexibility" to all the students. Individual competence-based instruction has been offered to those who have more capabilities.
In the past few years, students of Donghua have won awards and prizes in such national and international competitions including the International Collegiate Programming Contest, American Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM), Challenge Cup Chinese Collegiate Business Plan Competition, National Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest and CCTV Cup National Model Contest.
The employment rate for postgraduate students has reached 100% for six successive years. In 2003 and 2004, the employment rates for graduates were 97.07% and 98.30% respectively, while the rates for graduates from the vocational college reached 97.90% and 98.80% separately.
Scientific research
Backed up by state-key disciplines including textile engineering, material science, textile chemistry and dyeing & finishing engineering, fashion design and engineering, Donghua University concentrates its efforts on cross-disciplinary work, and endeavors to develop advantageous traditional disciplines as well as newly established disciplines. Supported by the scientific innovation bases like state key laboratories and the National University Science Park, which cover the whole textile industry chain, Donghua University actively engages herself in scientific research. It combines education with research and industry, and serves the nation’s and Shanghai’s economic construction as well as social development. Research projects have won the National Award for Advancement in Science and Technology, the National Award for invention, and provincial as well as ministry-level awards for advancement in science and technology.
For three successive years, various research projects, such as "Development of Protective Materials for the Surface of Space Suits", have been awarded the annual Ten Major Science Achievements of All Universities in China. Research achievements have been applied in many fields such as textile, new materials, aviation and spaceflight, agriculture, architecture, information, environmental protection, medical and health care.
Exchange and cooperation
Donghua University has established cooperative relationships with more than 60 higher education institutions as well as well-known enterprises around the world. Overseas students from 83 countries have graduated from the university. The university is steadily developing joint programs such as Donghua-Carleton IMBA, Sino-German Education for Bachelor Degree of Light Chemical Engineering, and Sino-Japan Education for Bachelor Degree of Fashion Design & Engineering.
Donghua has successfully hosted international conferences such as the International Fashion Forum of the Shanghai International Fashion Culture Festival and the 83rd World Conference of Textile Institutes.
Raffles Design Institute, Shanghai
Established in 1994, Raffles Design Institute, Shanghai(formerly DHU-Lasalle International Design College), a collaboration between singaporean education provider Raffles Education Corporation and Donghua University, China, enjoys pioneer status as one of the earliest approved Sino-Foreign Joint Venture Schools in Shanghai, China.
Raffles Design Institute, Shanghai is located within the Changning campus of Donghua University, which is one of the most prestigious top-ranking universities in China. The college enrolled its first intake of students in March 1995 and since then has seen a rapid rise in student population to more than 3000 today.
Raffles Design Institute, Shanghai is committed to nurture creative talents and design management expertise for the arts and design industry and has built up strong reputation for producing the most talented young designers and creative professionals in the region.
Campuses
Donghua University has two campuses: one in Changning District and the other in Songjiang District in Shanghai.
