South China University of Technology (SCUT) is a Chinese university located in Guangzhou, capital of the Guangdong province in mainland China. In 1999, SCUT ranked No. 23 among Asia's Best Universities by Asiaweek [http://www.asiaweek.com/asiaweek/universities/scitech/23.html] .

History

Formerly known as the South China Institute of Technology, it was established in 1952, through a reorganization process that unified the engineering schools and departments of major universities in South China, including the former Zhongshan University, Lingnan University, South China Joint University, and 4 others. In 1960, it was selected as one of 33 National Key Universities in Mainland China, under the direct administration of the Chinese Ministry of Education. The University was renamed as South China University of Technology in 1988.

Present

SCUT which enrolls students nationwide, including Hong Kong and Macao, has more than 50,000 students, out of which around 10,000 are at the postgraduate level. Internationally, it works with universities around the world through a number of programs, including an eMBA program in collaboration with the Anderson School of Management of UCLA [http://pub.cnsba.com/Mba/] , an MBA program with University of Wales [http://www2.scut.edu.cn/seb/NEW/TrainCenter/StudyAbroad/index.html] and St Clements University [http://www.scut-ec.cn/kecheng.asp] .

* Youqi ZHANG (张佑启; Cheung, Yau Kai) - Professor Cheung Yau Kai, formerly Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor of The University of Hong Kong and academic head of the Civil Engineering Department, was for many years Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. Professor Cheung is an internationally renowned researcher and scholar, well known in particular for his research activities in engineering mechanics and for his pioneering contributions to the methods of finite elements and finite strips for solving engineering problems. He completed his early education in Hong Kong and Guangzhou and was awarded Ph.D. and D.Sc. degrees in the United Kingdom. Professor Cheung is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was awarded an O.B.E. in 1995.
