Background

In March 1996 Madonna released this single from the album internationally, after the previous hit "You'll See" and the re-release of "Oh Father" in some European markets. In the United States the follow-up to "You'll See", and final single, was a remix of "Love Don't Live Here Anymore". But in Japan, the United Kingdom and a few other European countries "One More Chance" was released as the final single. In Australia and New Zealand, both "One More Chance" and "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" were released as singles. In an interview with Spin, Madonna said that the song was inspired by a happy moment in her life, when she gave a chance to a man she knew, and he was able to fulfill it to her needs. She reversed the situation and wrote the song. Madonna explained, "Often in my songwriting, I take things people say to me and turn them around, and put it in the first person. So it's actually something that was said to me."[1]

Music structure and lyrics

"One More Chance" is set in the time signature of common time, having a tempo of 92 beats per minute.[2] It is played in the key of F major, with a basic sequence of Cmaj7—Bm7—Am7—Bm7 as its chord progression, while the piano and guitar are used to play the background music.[2] Madonna's voice spans from G3 to Bb4.[2]

Commercial performance

"One More Chance" had barely any promotion and no official video but was still able to peak at a modest number 11 in the United Kingdom and at number 35 in Australia. A video was shown on MTV combining the videos for "Rain", "You'll See", I Want You", "Take a Bow" and "La Isla Bonita.

In Italy, "One More Chance" debuted at number 10 on the FIMI Singles Chart on April 6, 1996.[3] The next week, the single reached a peak of number two on the chart, staying there for one week before descending down the chart.[4]

The song also reached #1 in Hong Kong and #12 in Finland.
