ong information
The song was the follow-up to the single "American Life," but it suffered from the anti-war message that the song's original video had displayed. "Hollywood" became Madonna's first single to miss the Billboard Hot 100 since she first appeared on to the chart twenty years prior with "Holiday." "Hollywood" was released as the second "American Life" single on
July 3 2003 inEurope and onJuly 8 in theUnited States .In an interview, Madonna said of the song: "This song is like a metaphor for me. It's the city of dreams and superficiality. It's the place where you forget about the really interesting things in life. In Hollywood, you can lose your memory and your vision of the future. You can lose everything because you can lose yourself." Fact|date=May 2008
The single featured
remix es by Jacques Lu Cont,The Micronauts ,Paul Oakenfold ,Deepsky andVictor Calderone .Sander Kleinenberg 's remix can be heard in the vinyl EP "Confessions of an Icon: Remix EP", a bootleg record. Kleinenberg's remix is shortened for this release and is an edit of what he played on his radio show.In 2005 the song found an unlikely incarnation when it was performed live on occasion by controversial rocker,
Marilyn Manson during his Against All Gods tour. Guitarist Mark Chausee would play the song's recognizable arpeggiated riff, while Manson could be heard hauntingly singing the arguably melancholy lyrics offstage. It is unknown whether this infrequent interpretation of the song was officially endorsed and licensed by Madonna or not, but between 2005 and 2006 the two icons, Manson and Madonna, met for the first time and confessed for one another a mutual admiration. In 2004, a cover version of the song was recorded by indie dance-punk group CSS.Madonna also performed "Hollywood" on the
MTV special, "Onstage And On Record", and as an interlude on her 2004Re-Invention Tour .Into the Hollywood Groove
In August 2003, the song was remixed with "
Into the Groove " and performed withMissy Elliott under the title "Into the Hollywood Groove " as part of a promotional campaign for clothing store GAP. A promotional video was also shot, which received negative reviews from advertising critics. "Hollywood" failed to break onto the
Billboard Hot 100 in theUnited States ; it did manage some minimal pop and adult top 40 airplay."Hollywood" was released at a time when many American radio stations refused to play Madonna's songs, a decision perceived as a rebuttal to her anti-war sentiment in wake of the
2003 Invasion of Iraq , which is noted to also be a driving cause for the song's low chart positions.Though the song failed to enter the Hot 100, "Hollywood" did manage to break the top twenty in the singles charts of many other countries in which it was released. In the UK it entered at #2 (but fell to #15 in its second chart week).
In the United World Chart it peaked at number three.
Music video
The video dealt with the often shallow world of Hollywood. The video also features Madonna receiving
botox shots, now a symbol for the superficiality of the celebrity set. The video was based around re-creations of the photographs ofGuy Bourdin . Bourdin's son didn't consider the video to be homage, but rather stealing, and sued Madonna for using the images by his father without permission. Although Madonna has frequently appropriated the work of other artists in her music videos without legal trouble, in this case she reportedly settled the lawsuit with a $600,000 payout."Hollywood" was filmed on
June 2 -3,2003 atUniversal Studios inUniversal City, California and directed byJean-Baptiste Mondino . In the US, it premiered onJune 23 2003 onVH1 (along with a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the video),June 24 on yahoo.com andJune 27 onMTV .Two official remix videos of "Hollywood" were also released: the "Aviddiva Remix" created by Dustin Robertson is the more popular of the two remixes and features unreleased footage from the video shoot. The second remix video entitled the "Paul Oakenfold Edit" was released by
Warner Bros. Records as a promo-only and consists mostly of clips from the original video.*Director: Jean-Baptiste Mondino
