"Love Don't Live Here Anymore" is a 1978 song originally recorded by Rose Royce and produced by former Motown songwriter and producer Norman Whitfield for the Whitfield Records label.

The original Rose Royce version, with lead vocals by Rose Norwalt, appeared on the 1978 album "Rose Royce III: Strikes Again!" and reached #32 on the Billboard Hot 100, higher than any of the numerous covers performed by other artists. This version also reached #2 in the UK charts.

Cover versions

The song was later covered by Morrissey-Mullen (1979), Madonna (1984), I'm Talking (1985), Jimmy Nail (1985), Faith Evans (1995), Joe Cocker (2004), Patti LaBelle (2005) and Freemasons (band) (2007), amongst others. A reggae version was released in 1997 performed by Bounty Killer and Robin.

An early cover of the song was the instrumental track cut at EMI's Abbey Road Studios in 1979, when British jazz fusion duo Morrissey-Mullen was commissioned to record EMI's first-ever digital recording of a non-classical music piece and which was released as a limited edition 12" EP.

Jimmy Nail's version was, notably, a hit single in his native United Kingdom, reaching #3 on the UK chart.

An interpolation was used at the ending of Dr. Dre's track Big Ego's on his 1999 album 2001, replacing the line "Love don't live here anymore" with "Bitch, don't call here anymore".

Another interpolation was used in MoKenStef's "Stop Callin' Me" interlude for their 1995 album "Azz Izz" replacing the original line with "Your man don't live here anymore."

A live (date unknown) bootleg copy of a cover of the song has also been found, performed by Dallas Green of City and Colour/Alexisonfire with Canadian R&B singer Jully Black. Dallas Green, in his side-project City and Colour, sometimes covers the song live, either on his own, and one time with soul singer Jully Black. His cover also appears on his EP "The Myspace Transmissions" released September 9, 2008.

"Love Don't Live Here Anymore" is the sixth and final single by American singer-songwriter Madonna from her 2nd studio album, "Like a Virgin" and was released in March 10, 1986 by Sire Records in Japan only. It later appeared remixed on the 1995 ballads compilation "Something to Remember" and was re-released as a single on March 19, 1996 by Maverick Records with a new video directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino.

1995 version

In 1995 Madonna released a compilation of her greatest ballad hits entitled "Something to Remember", which included a remixed and reworked version produced by David Reitzas. In 1996, Warner Bros. Records commissioned a video (directed by Jean Baptiste Mondino) and released it as a single in certain markets such as Germany, South Africa, Australia and the United States. The video included another remix of the song, the "Soulpower Remix". The single was also scheduled to be released in the UK in August 1996, but was later shelved due to the lackluster chart positions of "Oh Father" (No.16 in December 1995) and "One More Chance" (No.11 in March 1996). Warner Bros. commissioned dance remixes for the song, which were released as promos to club DJs only.

Music video

The music video was directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino and has the arresting visuals that is associated with him: Madonna is seen pacing back and forth in a room filled with ornate furnitures and blowing gossamer-like drapes. It is also interesting that the clip was one long continuous take, with the camera slowly zooming into Madonna and then slowly zooming back out again. Madonna shot the video on March 4, 1996 at the Confitería El Molino in Buenos Aires, Argentina, during her day off from filming the movie "Evita". The video has many resemblances with the 1984 video to "Like a Virgin", particularly her black-laced outfit, the sweeping drapes and the columns in the room (the columns in Venice). The original song is also from the same album as the 1984 music video "Like a Virgin". In her "Evita" diaries published by "Vanity Fair" magazine in 1996, Madonna made reference to the video shoot. In her writings, she specifically mentioned forgetting the lyrics of the song, suggesting she was having an identity crisis of sorts trying to juggle her own identity with that of her role in "Evita". Madonna was also in the early stages of her pregnancy with daughter Lourdes while making the video. It is available on Madonna's DVD compilation "".
