Death row
Two facilities, Mansfield Correctional Institution and Ohio State Penitentiary, currently house male death row prisoners. Female death row inmates are housed in the Ohio Reformatory for Women. Executions occur at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility.[2]
On October, 3, 2011, the ODRC announced that all but eight male death row prisoners will be transferred to a new death row facility at thet Chillicothe Correctional Institution, with six high security inmates reamining at OSP and two with serious illnesses being held at the Franklin Medical Center. This will allow the units at OSP and Mansfield to be used to separate violent inmates from the general population and will reduce transportation costs to the execution chamber at SOCF. The move is expected to be completed by January 2012. [3]
Fallen officers
Since the establishment of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, 20 officers have died in the line of duty.[4]
