Geauga County is a county located in the state of Ohio, United States. As of 2000, the population was 90,895. It is named for a Native American word meaning "raccoon". Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 408 square miles (1,057 km²).404 square miles (1,045 km²) of it is land and 5 square miles (12 km²) of it (1.13%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 90,895 people, 31,630 households, and 24,987 families residing in the county. The population density was 225 people per square mile (87/km²). There were 32,805 housing units at an average density of 81 per square mile (31/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 97.42% White, 1.22% Black or African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 0.59% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 21.7% were of German, 11.0% Italian, 10.9% Irish, 10.1% English, 6.3% Polish and 6.2% American ancestry according to Census 2000. 89.4% spoke English, 5.1% German, 1.5% Pennsylvania Dutch and 1.0% Spanish as their first language.

There were 31,630 households out of which 37.10% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.90% were married couples living together, 7.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.00% were non-families. 17.60% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.90% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.84 and the average family size was 3.24.

In the county the population was spread out with 28.40% under the age of 18, 6.40% from 18 to 24, 26.60% from 25 to 44, 26.70% from 45 to 64, and 12.00% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 96.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $60,200, and the median income for a family was $67,427. Males had a median income of $48,443 versus $30,567 for females. The per capita income for the county was $27,944. About 2.80% of families and 4.60% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.10% of those under age 18 and 5.10% of those age 65 or over. The median household income and per capita income were the second highest among Ohio counties after Delaware, and 74th and 79th in the country, respectively.
