There are 3,142 counties in the United States. The source of the data is the U.S. Census Bureau and the data is current as of the indicated year.

Number of counties by state in following lists: Virginia 6, Maryland 5, New Jersey 3, New York 2, California 2, Colorado 1, Georgia 1.

11 of the 20 counties are part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area, 5 counties are part of the New York Metropolitan Area, and 2 are part of the San Francisco Bay Area. By Census region, 12 counties are located in the South, 5 in the Northeast, and 3 in the West.
