The company provides training for individuals, enterprises, schools and colleges. It has its presence in 40 countries worldwide.
In 2004 , NIIT was restructured into two groups. One is NIIT Limited, which focuses on the training and education in IT segment, and another which is known as NIIT Technologies which is an information technology (IT) solutions organization.[3]

History
NIIT was established in the year 1981 by Rajendra S. Pawar and Vijay K. Thadani. In early 1981, on the campus of Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India students Rajendra S. Pawar and Vijay K. Thadani found themselves sharing the same dorm room. After graduating from IIT, Pawar and Thadani developed NIIT.[4] During 1982 it set up educational centers in Mumbai, Delhi; later it spread to southern part of India, especially Bangalore. In the following years it began corporate training programs. It claims to be ranked among top 20 IT training institutions and graded among India's most trusted service brands.[5]
NIIT Limited
NIIT Limited education centers are found in over 40 countries and provide both classroom and on-line learning solution. NIIT Limited is one of Asia's largest IT training institutions, with more than 100 educational centers set up in China and other parts of Asia-Pacific region.[6] NIIT and its subsidiaries annual revenue of $224.1 million as of 2009.[7]
NIIT Technologies
NIIT Technologies Limited is an information technology (IT) solutions organization servicing customers in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia headquartered at New Delhi, India. The company focuses on customers in the banking, financial services and insurance, travel transportation and logistics, and retail and distribution sectors, offering services in application development and management, enterprise solutions and managed services. It also offers business process outsourcing and geographic information system (GIS) solutions through its subsidiaries. The Company’s service offerings include application development and management, package implementation, managed services, platform based services, business process outsourcing, GIS and cloud computing. It was established in 2004 when it split with NIIT Limited. According to NASSCOM NIIT technologies is ranked among India's top 20 IT software service exporter. It follows global standards of development, which includes ISO 9001:2000 certification, assessment at Level 5 of both SEI-CMMi version 1.2 and People-CMM frameworks and ISO 27001 information security management certification.[citation needed] Its data center operations are assessed at the international ISO 20000 IT management standards.[8] NIIT Technologies has alliance with global IT companies such as Computer Associates, IBM, Microsoft, Metalogic, SAP AG, Cisco Systems and Oracle Corporation. At present NIIT Technologies is involved in four sectors: legacy modernization and maintenance, knowledge management solution, customized SW solution and enterprise integration.[citation needed]
- Acquisitions
- It has acquired German based company Softech, which serves small and medium airlines operations.
- NIIT Technologies also acquired UK-based company ROOM Solution late in 2006-2007.[9]
It has two subsidiaries, NIIT SmartServe Limited and NIIT GIS Limited, which provide business process outsourcing and GIS solutions, respectively. NIIT Technologies annual revenue of INR 9,799 million as of 2009.[2]

There are many online education organizations in India. Of those, Educomp Solutions, EdServ Softsystems Limited, Everonn Education and Aptech are NIIT's main competitors.[11]

- School Learning Solutions - this provides training and learning solutions to government and to private schools.
- Corporate Learning Solutions- this division provides training services such as off the shelf learning library, custom content development, customized instructor led training and training administration services. Element K a US company, acquired by NIIT in 2006, forms about two thirds of the sales from this division.

NIIT Institute of financial banking (IFBI), formed with equatity participation with ICICI Bank, which offers programs to develop talent in banking industry.[42]
Later NIIT offer Turkey integration program for schools and cater computer base training to over 5000 government schools.
NIIT's corporate learning solutions, it offers corporate learning solution to Fortune 500 companies, Universities, technological companies, training corporation and publishing companies.
Element K delivers learning solutions for customers and partners through a tailored solution through catalog learning products, technology and services. It offers Virtual lab (hand-on-labs), instructor led course ware, comprehensive journals and e-libraries.[43]
NIIT Imperia collaborated with KPMG India to cater advanced certified program upon International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). This program is generally obtained within six week and is meant to assist companies from Indian General Accepted Accounting Principals to IFRS.[44]
