The Department of Statistics for Georgia is a governmental body in charge of national statistics and responsible for carrying out a census once in every four years in Georgia (country).

History
The earliest references to the collection of statistics in Georgia date from the thirteenth century. Materials from population censuses made in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in various regions of the country have survived to the present day.
On November 15, 1918 a temporary Statistical Bureau was formed within the Ministry of Agriculture. The bureau’s functions included development of materials for agricultural census, accounting of the available land and determining of norms for its distribution. On the basis of law enacted by the Constitution Assembly on July 25, 1919, a Republican Statistical Committee was formed within the same ministry. The committee was assigned to manage all types of statistical works of national importance.
Head of Department
The Department is managed by the Chairman Grigol Pantsulaia and by two Secretaries of the Head of Department.
The work and publications
The Department is responsible for carrying out the National General Census once in every four years. The latest NGC dates back to 2002 and the next one is to be carried out in 2010. It is not known why there was no Census in 2006. The principal objectives of 2002 National General Cesus were:

- Resident Population at the Age of 100 and Over [5]

- Population Aged 15 and Over by Marital Status [8]

The Headoffice of the Department of Statistics is located in the Saburtalo District in Tbilisi, on Gamsakhurdia. The nearest tube station is Politek'nikuri.
