Medley is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The community was named after its founder, Sylvester Medley. The population was 1,098 at the 2000 census. As of 2005, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 1,059.[3] Located in the western part of the county, its primary tax base is industrial development, which is why the population is so small and the city so dense. The city was founded in the 1940s. It is next to the city of Miami Springs and across the Miami River from Hialeah. The city is home to a Rinker plant, one of its largest businesses. Also home to the Titan America Pennsuco Cement Plant.

Medley is located at 25°51′30″N 80°20′21″W / 25.85833°N 80.33917°W / 25.85833; -80.33917 (25.858307, -80.339141)[4].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11 km2). 3.8 square miles (9.8 km2) of it is land and 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2) of it (12.09%) is water.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,098 people, 363 households, and 267 families residing in the town. The population density was 290.7 inhabitants per square mile (112.2/km²). There were 387 housing units at an average density of 102.4 per square mile (39.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 84.15% White (18% were Non-Hispanic Whites,)[5] 7.29% African American, 0.18% Native American, 1.91% Asian, 4.10% from other races, and 2.37% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 72.59% of the population.

There were 363 households out of which 34.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.4% were non-families. 20.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.15.

In the town the population was spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $23,167, and the median income for a family was $25,909. Males had a median income of $26,964 versus $18,409 for females. The per capita income for the town was $11,955. About 14.3% of families and 20.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.0% of those under age 18 and 33.5% of those age 65 or over. New households (condominiums) are being constructed along the Miami River in order to raise house quality.[citation needed]

As of 2000, speakers of Spanish as a first language accounted for 83.65%, while English as a mother tongue made up 16.34% of the population.[6]

As of 2000, Medley had the ninth highest percentage of Cuban residents in the US, with 51.91% of the populace.[7] It had the seventy-second highest percentage of Colombian residents in the US, at 2.09% of the town's population,[8] and the twenty-third highest percentage of Nicaraguan residents in the US, at 2% of the its population.[9] It also had the twenty-fourth most Hondurans in the US, at 1.55% (tied with Spencer, North Carolina,)[10] while it had the sixty-third highest percentage of Peruvians, at 1% of all residents.[11]
