Description

Marin Transit utilizes four contractors to provide public transit service within Marin County.

  • Golden Gate Transit operates all of the local bus service, consisting of twelve local fixed routes and six supplemental school service fixed routes. It also operates one seasonal local fixed route and one seasonal supplemental school service fixed route.
  • MV Transportation operates three fixed routes using Marin Transit's West Marin Stagecoach brand.
  • Marin Airporter operates three local shuttle fixed routes.
  • Whistlestop Wheels operates the Novato Dial-a-Ride demand-response service and the county's ADA complementary paratransit service.

Combined, these Marin Transit services serve all major cities, towns, and communities within Marin County except for Muir Beach, Peacock Gap, and parts of West Marin (beyond Inverness).

History

Marin Transit was formed by a vote of the people of Marin County in 1964 and was given the responsibility for providing local transit service within Marin County. It was founded five years ahead of Golden Gate Transit, which would then eventually provide commuter services between Marin County and San Francisco, and it has since played a key role in providing local services within the county through various funding sources (Measure A Funds, State Transportation Development Act Funds, fares, property taxes and Federal Section 5311 rural transit funds).[1] For a history of the service in relation to Golden Gate Transit, click here.

Novato shuttles

The Novato Dial-a-Ride[3] provides curb-to-curb shuttle service within the City of Novato by reservation only. Replacing the former EZ Rider service that served only portions of the city, the Novato Dial-a-Ride supplements fixed-route bus service and operates to areas where Golden Gate Transit does not, including Bahia, Bel Marin Keys, and Black Point.

Novato Dial-a-Ride operates daily. Reservations for weekday service are allowed up to seven (7) days in advance, with same-day service available as space permits. Only same-day reservations are permitted for weekend service. No service is available on certain holidays, including Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Days.

The Hamilton Shuttle is a weekday, peak period-only service connecting the Alameda del Prado Park-and-Ride Lot and the Hamilton neighborhood. The free service is operated by Whistlestop Wheels and funded by the Hamilton Field Neighborhood Association. The service is not controlled by Marin Transit.

Fares

A Golden Gate Transit local transfer (issued on routes operated by Marin Transit) that allows a 3-hour travel period within Marin County.

All Marin Transit fares, except the 6-month and yearly youth passes, also apply to all Golden Gate Transit routes operating within Marin County regardless of whether the service is under contract with Marin Transit. Route 66 has special fares, which are described below.

Fare category Cash fare Clipper† 1-day pass 7-day pass 31-day pass

Route 66 (Muir Woods Shuttle) fares

Marin Transit charges special fares on Route 66, which is the Muir Woods shuttle. The "Round-Trip Muir Woods Shuttle Pass" costs US$3.00 for adults and US$1.00 for youth, senior, disabled, and Medicare passengers. The pass is valid for connecting bus service to and from any point within Marin County, and the fare is paid on the first bus boarded.

Value Cards

Value Cards are prepaid fare media available in denominations of US$18.00 and US$36.00. Value Cards provide the same discounted fares as TransLink but can be used on all Marin Transit services except the Novato Dial-a-Ride, not just buses operated by Golden Gate Transit. Passengers must request the appropriate discount fare (US$1.80 or US$1.00) before inserting Value Cards into the farebox to avoid being charged the regular US$2.00 fare. These cards may not be used on Golden Gate Transit routes for any travel outside of Marin County.

Youth passes

Marin Transit Youth Passes (available for US$175 for 6 months and US$325 for one school year) are available to youths ages 6 through 18, and it allows unlimited rides on any Marin Transit route (all local buses, local shuttles, and West Marin Stagecoach). These passes are not valid on Golden Gate commute or regional basic routes (cf. List of Golden Gate Transit Routes).

Paratransit service

Marin Access is an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) complementary paratransit (Handicapped/disabled access) service within Marin County operated under contract with Whistlestop Wheels. Whistlestop Wheels also operates the Novato Health Express, a medical shuttle service provided to Novato Community Hospital for seniors and the disabled.[4]

Fuel cell bus partnerships

Golden Gate Transit, in partnership with AC Transit and other transit agencies in the Bay Area, participates in the California Fuel Cell Program, which is sponsored by the California Air Resources Board and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) in partnership with the Department of Energy (DOE).[5] The partnership includes a demonstration of fuel cell-powered buses designed to reduce the use of gasoline as fuel and instead use alternative, renewable resources to power new urban buses. Golden Gate Transit operated the fuel cell buses on several Marin Transit routes during the Zero Emission Bus Demonstration Program in 2008.[6]
