- Dumbarton Express
-
The Dumbarton Express is a California bus service operating between Union City BART station and Palo Alto Caltrain station via the Dumbarton Bridge. The service is operated by a group of operators including BART, VTA, Union City Transit, and AC Transit. The bus line is colored orange and designated "DB" on VTA system maps. The bus service charges $1.75 for an adult local fare, $4.20 for a transbay fare, and $1.75 for a Transbay extension of a pass that is good only for local fares. Half-fares are charged for children, seniors and disabled persons. VTA ECO Passes, AC Transit Transbay passes, or ten-ride tickets are accepted for full Transbay fare. Within the East Bay, AC Transit tickets, Union City Transit tickets, and Caltrain monthly passes for two or more zones are accepted for a full local fare or half a Transbay fare. BART Plus tickets are no longer accepted on the Dumbarton Express for local fare. BART passengers without a valid pass for the Dumbarton Express (DB) bus must pay full fare. Within the Peninsula, passes from SamTrans, VTA, and Caltrain are accepted, though the same rules governing Caltrain passes on the East Bay apply. The U.C. Berkeley Class Pass is accepted for all Transbay or local fares except the Dumbarton Express.
Due to the acceptance of different monthly passes, especially in the Peninsula, some people pay significantly more per month. For example, a commuter using a VTA pass for Peninsula local service would pay $61.25 per month, whereas a commuter using a SamTrans pass for the same services would pay only $48. A youth using such passes would pay as much as $20 less by using a SamTrans pass.
In January 2006, AC Transit proposed a service review and fare increase that would bring fare media in line with AC Transit's Transbay passes while maintaining Peninsula pass acceptance. While the fare changes were implemented in October 2006, the proposed rerouting of the bus service was not implemented. If the reroute occurs, the DB line will be rerouted to provide a more direct route to Palo Alto Caltrain. DB1 may be replaced by DB3, which will provide service to East Palo Alto. In addition DB2 will be added to provide service to East Palo Alto from Union City.
