zone=Caltrain Fare Zone 2Millbrae Station (also known as Millbrae Intermodal Terminal) is an at-grade Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and
Caltrain station located in suburbanMillbrae, California , in northernSan Mateo County .Description
Millbrae Station is the largest intermodal terminal in the United States west of the Mississippi in terms of station facilities and acreageFact|date=August 2008. It consists of three at-grade main tracks for
BART and two forCaltrain . Anisland platform provides a cross-platform connection between the two systems (for traveling northward to San Francisco). An elevated concourse mezzanine is located above the platforms. Currently, two BART tracks and oneisland platform usually are kept out of regular service, used instead as a de factorail yard to house train sets that are also out of service. However, because one of the two Caltrain tracks is serviced only by aside platform , to remove Caltrain sets from service, passengers occasionally must disembark using this island platform. The station is also a regional
bus transit hub with multiplebus bay s served by severalSamTrans lines.Millbrae Station has approximately 3,000 parking spaces, including a five-story parking garage and surrounding surface parking. Except for the marked Reserved Parking areas, most parking is currently free of charge during weekdays for up to 24 hours at a time, and all parking (including the weekday reserved) is free without time restrictions on Saturday, Sunday, and holidays that fall on Friday or Monday. Additionally, the Reserved Parking areas become free parking after 10:00 a.m. on weekdays.
BART service
The station is the
terminal station for BART on theSan Francisco Peninsula with service by the BARTRichmond – Millbrae Line on weekdays and the BARTDublin/Pleasanton - Millbrae Line during weeknights and on weekends. There is currently no direct connection provided to the airport, except during the first and last hours of BART service each day. A timed transfer to an airport-boundPittsburg/Bay Point – SFO Line BART train, however, is provided at the San Bruno Station north of Millbrae.Caltrain service
The station offers extensive daily Caltrain commuter rail service that operates along the north/south line between San Jose and San Francisco on an approximately half-hourly basis each weekday (including express
skip-stop trains). Service is more frequent during commute hours and for special events (such asSan Francisco Giants home games) and is less-frequent at night and on weekends and holidays. Caltrain service south of San Jose to Gilroy is limited to three daily commute-hour round trips.History
The original Millbrae depot, served only by Caltrain since 1985, was located about 200 feet (61 m) to the south and now houses the Millbrae Train Museum, which opened in 2004. Before the present Millbrae Intermodal Terminal was constructed for the BART San Mateo Extension terminus, Millbrae was a crucial stop along the Caltrain line, as it offered a free connection to what was then a Caltrain shuttle bus between the station and nearby
San Francisco International Airport . (The trip is now only available on from the station via taxicab or BART, currently costing $1.50 via the latter as of January 2008.)Caltrain service began at the original Millbrae depot in
1985 , as part of the rebranding of previous rail passenger services that had operated along theSan Francisco Peninsula since the early 20th century (seePeninsula Commute ). Caltrain migrated to the new facility in spring 2003, and BART joined Caltrain at the new current station onJune 22 ,2003 , [ [http://www.bart.gov/docs/BARThistory.pdf untitled ] ] as part of the BART San Mateo County Extension project that extended BART service southward from Colma to Millbrae and San Francisco International Airport.Gallery
