It is located in the Prekmurje region. It has a significant Hungarian ethnic community that outnumbers the Slovenes. In fact, Dobrovnik is one of the two municipalities in Slovenia where ethnic Slovenes form a minority of the population, the other being Hodoš.
Dobrovnik is first mentioned in written sources dating to 1270. In 1747 the entire village, including the parish church was badly damaged in a fire. The new parish church was built between 1794 and 1796 and is dedicated to Saint James and belongs to the Murska Sobota Diocese.[2]
