It lies to the east of Ptuj, partly on the river Pesnica and partly in the Slovenske gorice hills. Traditionally the area was part of the Lower Styria region. The municipality is now included in the Podravje statistical region.[2]
The parish church in the settlement is dedicated to Saint Dorothea and belongs to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Maribor. It was built 1519 and rebuilt in the early 18th century.[3]
Dornava is best known for a large Baroque mansion to the north of the village. It was built in the 15th century, but after itr was destroyed by fire in 1695 it was entirely rebuilt in the early 18th century. It is one of the best preserved examples of a Baroque mansion in Slovenia.[4]
