History
The once-rural region that the town now occupies became a favourite destination for CN Rail company picnics. Many CN employees bought or built summer cottages, and eventually people took up permanent residency in the town.
In 1864, on a train bridge crossing the Richelieu River between Otterburn Park and Beloeil, 99 people were killed when an immigrant train failed to stop at an open swing bridge and fell into the river. Hence the bridge's name, "Pont Noir", or black bridge.
