It is the seat of the Regional County Municipality of Deux-Montagnes in the greater Montreal region.
The name "Deux-Montagnes" (French for "Two Mountains") dates to 1674 when it was given to the lake bordering on the municipality, and to the seigneury which stood north of the lake. Originally founded as the Village Municipality of Saint-Eustache-sur-le-Lac in 1921, it became a city in 1958, and changed its name to Deux-Montagnes in 1963.[2]
The municipality has two commuter train stations, on the Deux-Montagnes Line: Deux-Montagnes and Grand-Moulin.
